Such success comes easy for white Americans since a study done by Newsweek (2011) an online news company demonstrated that 9 out of 10 white Americans graduate in four years meanwhile 5 out of 10 minorities graduate in 7 years. Why is this? B. Background: Some more background for you, did you know that in California less than 15 percent of Hispanics hold a bachelors degree, and near 10 percent of African Americans hold a bachelors compared to 34 percent of white Americans. If we take what Shah and Sewell comment about success, why isn’t minority success the same? C. Relevance: In order to have a bigger picture of the world, and be informed of social injustices D. Credibility: I am a Hispanic/Latino American who has taken two Latin American Studies courses, one focusing on higher education. Besides it wouldn’t be the same if an Anglo-American gave this speech E. Preview of Main Points: 1. Problem: Very few role models in Hispanic/Latino American lives with higher education degrees 2. Problem: Schools in low income communities do not have the same funding that schools in high income communities have 3. Solution: Higher funding for schools in low income communities Transition 1: William Sewell and Vimal Shah (1967), retired doctorate professors of sociology at the University of Wisconsin state that role models in society are used to set the bar of success by others. II. First Main Point: Hispanics/Latinos have very few role models in their lives A. Third Generation Hispanic/Latinos apply to college 1. Beginning with immigrant workers in the 1950s and 60s, due to the migratory status of first generation Hispanics/Latinos College was not an option since financial aid was not available to them nor was there many jobs available to them. Therefore they would end up with weak economic stability (Ovink, Veazey, 2011). 2. Following the line second generation Hispanics/Latinos did not apply to college but instead searched a job right after high school (if they graduated) to help their parents with their debt (2011). 3. It’s usually a third generation Hispanic American who applies to college since the parents might have more economic stability than the grandparents and since more financial aid makes college affordable (2011). B. Not many Hispanic Role Models 4. If it takes two to three generations for Hispanics/Latino Americans to attend college, there is a lack of role models for them to set the bar. a. Compared to white Americans who have had generations going to college, and who only need to turn on the television to see an individual with a degree (MacDonald, Botti, Hoffman, 2010). 5. White Americans have many more role models . Take for example an Ivy League school; a minority must apply with pure merit mean while a person with a certain last name or certain amount donated gets instant admission (2010). c. There are not many Hispanic/Latino American individuals who have a large sum or amount of money to donate to schools nor are there many renowned Latinos (2010). 6. The article by these three individuals (2010) continues to state that the only role models Latinos really have is movie actors and music artist who are usually not even American Transition Statement 2: Lets look at the second problem though. III. Second Main Point: Lack of economic aid to low income communities, A. Low funding for schools in low income schools 1. Due to recent budget cuts teachers are being laid off while the number of students continues to grow, creating bigger class sizes (Clemmitt, 2007) 2. Less individual attention to each student (2007) 3. Take Southern California for example, schools are highly underfunded since the drop out rate for Hispanics/Latinos is 32. 8% (2007) B. Show graph, Minority Funding Gaps By State (Funding Gaps 2006, The Education trust) 4. The average funding for a student should be $2,000 or more through out his/her school year. Indicated here, less than $500 (Clemmit, 2007) 5. A study conducted by UCLA showed that the school most funded by LAUSD was Beverly Hills High School with a 90. 8% graduation rate where minorities are less than 20% (Neil and Balfanz, 2007). C. Show next graph, Blacks, Hispanics Attend High Poverty Schools (â€Å"The Condition of Education 2004 in Brief† National Center for Education, 2004) 6. 75% percent of Hispanic/Latino Americans attend high-poverty schools, while less than 5% of white Americans do (Neild and Balfanz, 2007) D. Show last graph, Majority of Drop Outs Are Hispanic, Black (â€Å"The Cost and Benefits of an Excellent Education for All of America’s Children† Teachers College, Columbia University, 2007) 7. As one can notice not only are Hispanics in low income schools, but as a result they are the most that are high school drop outs. Transition Statement 3: As you have noticed there is a serious social problem, an injustice with not only Hispanics but minorities in general. To every problem there is a solution though. IV. Third Main Point: Higher Funding and Role Models A. According to Luis Ricardo Fraga, Kenneth J. Meier and Robert E. Englan in their article on the Journal of Politics (1986)) representation of minorities in higher education has stayed low and will stay low unless Hispanics create public figures with professional degrees (p. 856) 1. How can this be done? B. Higher Funding for low income schools 2. Low Income schools need more funding to redirect resources to creating a better educational curriculum so that programs and acts such as No Child Left Behind can reach their full potential (Kelly, Scheider, Carey 2010) C. Prompting Hispanic Americans to finish college 3. According to Kelly, Schneider and Carey (2010), its not so much learning about the problem in minority graduation rates but also about creating role models for Hispanic Americans even if they are not the same ethnicity. 4. The American Enterprise Institute for Public Policy Research an organization funded by Bill Gates also states in the same article that even if one is not Hispanic one should take initiative in ones community and become a role model for minority students not just Hispanic students by volunteering at a high school or school (2010). . Doing this will help create a stronger and smarter society through education diminishing gender, and racial lines (2010) Transition Statement 4: As we can see, Education in Hispanic Americans is a serious problem and a social injustice for other minorities also. V. Conclusion A. Review of Main Points: 1. MP/Problem- Hispanic Americans do not have many role models in their lives due to how it takes two or three generations for a Hispanic American family to have a college graduate. The popular role models that Hispanics currently have are artist, or actors not college graduates 2. MP/Problem- Not enough money is being funded into low income schools causing less money or funding to create high school graduate individuals and college graduates 3. The Solution is Discipline, Not School Choice Charlie is a problem child by any definition of the word.   He hasn't done anything horrific, like shooting another student or attacking a teacher. It's the annoying games he plays that drive everyone crazy. His favorite game is throwing scissors at the chalkboard when the teacher's back is turned.   He likes the screeching noise he can make if he throws the scissors at just the right angle.   And when he gets caught, he loves cursing at the teacher.   His biggest thrill is telling her to "mind her own f---ing business" while his classmates giggle or snicker. Charlie's teacher, Mrs. Anderson, spends her class time frustrated and powerless to stop Charlie's constant disruptive behavior.   At first, she looks him in the eye and asks him to stop.   Finally, she points her index finger toward the door and says, "Get out!" Charlie's classmates breathe a sigh of relief.   Mrs. Anderson does not.   She knows that tomorrow Charlie's father and mother will storm the principal's office demanding that she be fired or reprimanded.   Mom and Dad think that Charlie's personal rights have been violated; that he has a right to learn and not be disciplined by anyone, except by his own parents.   Due to this precedent, Charlie grows up with little educational discipline or accountability.  Ã‚   As Charlie's parents watch him grow into adulthood, they are forced to admit that their son is actually poorly educated, disrespectful and far from perfect. This story is all too familiar in America's public schools today.   Children in need of discipline have suddenly become the victims and their teachers, the oppressors.   As a result, America's school children are sorely under-educated and undiscipline... ...wer than 25 in a year. Implementing this change throughout America, especially suburbia, will not be easy.   This is where every American must recognize that in order to educate all our public school children we must deny a part of our own "self interest".  Ã‚   In order to make the change, America's parents and politicians must recognize that this "greater cause" can be public education.  Ã‚   Charlie's parents, along with many other parents, need to be encouraged to recognize that sometimes a little tough love is in their child's best interest. The next time Charlie's parents seek to confront school officials on behalf of their disruptive child, they need to be met with the empowerment of authority.   More importantly, Mrs. Anderson should be able to provide a healthy learning environment for all the children, if possible with Charlie, but if necessary, without him.

Context and Description of the Advertisement Essay

The advert, BK SUPER SEVEN INCHER, is the property of Burger King Food aimed at promoting the new sandwich that the company has produced for its customers. From the start, the advert makes you think of something sexual through the picture and words that have been used in the advert. The display of the advert is a picture of a woman with her mouth open and the sandwich going in and at the bottom of the advert. There is a caption which states â€Å"it’ll BLOW your mind away† Using pathos, for humor and the text of the advert. Context and Description of the Advertisement The ad I choose is a more recent advert by Burger King Food, which they have developed to promote the has a woman with red lipstick, side view of her with her mouth open, with the new BK sandwich, going by the name the â€Å"BK SUPER SEVEN INCHER† heading into her mouth. Right underneath the picture it has the caption, â€Å"IT’LL BLOW YOUR MIND AWAY† and in the upper right hand corner it also reads; â€Å"IT JUST TASTES BETTER†. From the outlook of the whole advert, I believe the target of the audience was directed mainly towards the male gender, especially the younger males from the age of 18 years and those whole are middle-aged. This is due to the reason that the image used is that of a young woman opening her mouth for a sandwich, which is attractively decorated (Petley, 2003). The text used also tends to create some kind of sexual image in combination to the picture of the woman. However, it could also be fit for women as well, since it seems to be d irected and make the audience believe it is a sexual advert. This is demonstrated through the use of various words like; â€Å"BLOW, Fill your desire for something long, and it just tastes better† as well as have the picture of a white young lady who is opening her red lipstick mouth to a sandwich that is claimed to be seven inches in length. The company, Burger King is known to be one of the all American fast food joints that compete with other companies such as McDonald’s, Carl’s Jr., and In and Out, which also offer similar products among many others. The intention of the advert in my opinion was to create and bring out some form of humor for the majority of the customers who are in the younger age group category of customers (Petley, 2003). The use of some form of sexual context in the advert was to draw attention of those customers in the age group mentioned above. The image used in the advert is that of a white woman, displaying the side view of her face, with some short blonde hair wearing some lipstick on her lips. The picture of the young lady in the advert displays her mouth open and the new sandwich known as the â€Å"BK SUPER SEVEN INCHER† sandwich heading straight into her mouth. The caption in the upper right hand corner says, â€Å"IT JUST TASTES BETTER† and right below the image there is another caption which states that, â€Å"It’ll blow your mind away†. In the lower part of the second caption in the advert has the picture or image of the sandwich that is being offered with the name of the sandwich being â€Å"BK SUPER SEVEN INCHER†. Additional fine print of the advert contains details about the sandwich and it states, â€Å"fill your desire for something long†. The use of color has been done in such a way that there is harmony and clearly outlines the details of the advert making the words legible and the picture visible and attractive (Petley, 2003). Analysis of Rhetorical Appeals The advert clearly demonstrates various rhetorical appeals and I believe that Burger King Food has made use of all the three rhetorical appeals in their advert (Rosenwasser, & Stephen, 2012). The rhetorical appeals which have been used include appeal to Logos, Ethos and Pathos. Reasoning (Logos) It is important that an advert must appeal to reasoning and sound logical when someone interested looks at the image of the advert in addition to the picture used in an advert. Using various texts in the advert for example, â€Å"IT JUST TASTE BETTER†, as used in the advert, placed in the upper right hand corner. Burger Kind Food makes one see the logic behind the woman and the sandwich through the use of the above text mentioned as an example (Rosenwasser, & Stephen, 2012). It is logical since this is a new product placed in a recent advert hence the statement, â€Å"IT JUST TASTE BETTER†. Character (Ethos) The author of the advert, Burger King Food, tries to appeal to ethos through the picture of the woman used in the advert and the words which may elicit different emotions such as desire, love or some sexually relate emotions (Rosenwasser, & Stephen, 2012). The author displays the side view of the woman with red lipstick and an open mouth in addition to words such as â€Å"Just tastes better† and â€Å"It’ll blow your mind away†. In this advert, the image of the sandwich is directed towards the mouth of the young lady who is displayed, which the author of the advert uses to elicit emotions and feelings of wanting to have the exact same sandwich as the one in the advert. Emotion (Pathos) The author has used the side view of the woman with red lipstick and a wide open mouth. This brings the feeling of desire for food, especially sandwich, since it arouses the emotion of desire to try out the sandwich (Rosenwasser, & Stephen, 2012). Through the use of the picture of a woman with an open mouth and a sandwich heading inside the mouth with red lipstick in addition to the use of the words such as â€Å"IT’LL BLOW YOUR MIND AWAY†, evokes may evoke or give the impression of sexual feelings. Furthermore, in the fine print of the advert it states that, â€Å"Fill your desire for something long† in addition to the title â€Å"BK SUPER SEVEN INCHER†. This arouses the feelings and makes one to believe that the advert is more of a sexual advert than just a simple commercial advert that is intended to promote the sandwich (Petley, 2003). Conclusion From the analysis of the advert, I was able to make a concluding finding on this advert as one that has led me to believe that it is in fact a sexual advert. Based on the context of the texts that have been used in the advert as well as the image as shown below, the advert is more sexual oriented and is more inclined towards the male gender who may be the customers to be attracted by the advert. Apart from being an advert that seems to portray a different message than what may have been the intention of the author, it is a captivating advert and quite appealing to the intended audience hence I would say that the advert has achieved its main objective of attracting the audience to make purchase of the new sandwich by Burger King Food. The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle June 4, 2012 Ann Lee 8D â€Å"The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle† by Avi is about a thirteen-year-old girl, Charlotte Doyle, traveling from England to America, where her family was living. After the ship had left, she realized that she was the only female passenger on the ship, which was called Seahawk. Charlotte was an upper class and educated girl, unlike many of the sailors on the ship. Despite the fact that one of the sailors warned Charlotte about Captain Jaggery’s true side, Charlotte didn’t believe him and became friends with Captain Jaggery, who seemed like a gentleman to her.However, she realized that the captain was using her to get information and he was cruel to the sailors. Charlotte decided to join the rebels. The rebels wanted to kill the captain, who was cruel and mean to them, and Captain Jaggery was trying to prevent the sailors from rebelling against him. Clearly, there was a conflict between the reb els and Captain Jaggery. The climax of the story was when Captain Jaggery died by falling off the ship, and the conflict was also resolved, since the war between the rebels and Captain Jaggery was over. The main theme of this novel is the change of identity.Before her journey, she was just a rich, upper class girl, who was educated. But when she was on the ship with other sailors, she had to be one of them. She wore dirty clothes that she wasn’t allowed to wear at home and didn’t care about her manners and behaviors. Her parents always told her to behave like a lady, but her identity has changed when she was on the ship; she was acting like a different person. Clearly, change of identity took place in this novel. I like how this book was written in the perspective of a teenage girl, who is about my age. I could understand the character better, and read the book from her perspective.
